Bertie Hubbard, CEO of MyTutor comments on the return to schools along with findings from mental health insights

Hi Mirela,

I hope you’re well today.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that schools will be reopening on March 8th. Children of all ages will be returning to classroom, with older pupils to wear masks. This news will undoubtedly be welcomed by many parents and their children who have struggled with home-schooling throughout the pandemic.

New nationally representative research from the UK’s leading online tutoring platform, MyTutor, has found that parents are witnessing record levels of anxiety and stress amongst themselves and their children as a result of home-schooling. In fact, sadly 42% of parents have reported their child has the highest levels of stress they’ve ever observed. Consequently, 42% have relaxed the pressures of home-schooling for their child to try and support their mental health.

Key Statistics:

42% agree (4,730,000) that their child has the highest levels of stress they have observed in his/her lifetime
42% of parents (4,113,000) agree that their child has experienced high levels of anxiety due to the reduced class time for assessments that exam results will be gauged from
75% (8,069,000) say that their child has regular breaks throughout the day to alleviate the stress of home-schooling
42% (4,562,000) say that they have relaxed the pressures of home-schooling for their child considerably in comparison to previous lockdowns and school closures
Whilst the move back to schools brings back a sense of normality and structure to many children’s routines, there are a great many who still have to contend with the challenges of home-schooling. For many children, free online group tuition that helps to supplement their education is available from online platforms such as MyTutor.

Commenting on the return to schools, MyTutor CEO Bertie Hubbard offered the following insights.

“2021 has been a tough year for children so far. And after months out of school, exam cancellations, not seeing friends and worrying about Covid-19, it’s no surprise that 26% parents feel their child’s mental health has declined. 17% parents agree that their mental health is the worst it’s ever been, and 59% have noticed a decline in their motivation to learn. With schools opening again, catching up on lost learning and prepping for retakes and mocks this term brings another set of challenges for teens.

They’re in more need than ever for some support and reassurance with their studies, and that’s exactly what our tutors offer. Our tutors are all from UK unis, and because they’re just a few years older they can easily relate to what teens are going through. With their dedicated one-to-one support, teens get some much-needed reassurance and come out with a stronger self-belief – 88% say that lessons made them feel more confident.”
